How Mindfulness Changed my Life: Why I live Mindfully

Updated: Dec 3, 2021

Thank you for finding this Blog. In this article, I share how I learned about Mindfulness and how I began integrating Mindfulness into my life.

Take it from me, a Mindfulness Lifestyle can benefit your health and total wellbeing. Be sure to watch the video along with this, where I will share more of my mindfulness experiences.

I wanted to become more self-aware, and like you, I have experienced stresses, joys, and much sorrow. I am also very dyslexic, so I shied away from anything to do with writing or public speaking as much I could. Through the years, I tried journaling but never was consistent with it. Due to my dyslexia, writing caused me GREAT anxiety. So, I would abandon my efforts only after a few weeks.

Then I discovered Mindfulness. All my life, I have enjoyed practising holistic living, which means caring for my mind, body, and soul. However, I never really ventured into the mindfulness territory. I really didn't understand what it was and why I should learn it. Thinking about it, I never connected Mindfulness with my lifestyle or the health of my mind, body, or soul.

I escaped a very abusive marriage many years back, which caused me to be emotionally and physically ill, and as a result, I developed bodily weakness and became susceptible to colds, flu. The abuse became a lifestyle- every day was the same. I tried to leave, but there were many complications.

However, finally, I did leave the relationship. I began seriously fearing for my safety when my spouse put me in hospital. But through all this experience, my lifestyle wreaked my immune system, making me feel like an old lady, not only in my body but in my mind as well. After we separated and lived alone, I spent over a year with women's aid to receive weekly counselling. I was still working full time, and my colleagues nor my family knew the gravity of my situation.

For my continued safety and wellbeing, I moved away from my spouse to the other side of the city. On moving day, I had some help from friends, then the ti

I came for them to return to their homes. By this time, it was by late afternoon. I was alone, but I wanted to move my microwave from one bench to another, where the accident occurred. Lifting the cumbersome microwave oven, I barely reached the bench height, so I decided to stand on a low table (I am only 4ft 11ins). Unfortunately, I toppled over, fell with the microwave, landed on my right shoulder, and slammed into the hard kitchen floor. I was in great pain and taken to hospital by a friend who I called upon. The doctor reported that I had ripped my shoulder, and two of the main tendons snapped. Unfortunately, I lost the use of my arm for over three months, and because I could no longer drive, I also took sick leave from work for that time.

During this time, my divorce went through and living alone, I was trying to manage one-handed, which was not easy. I prayed and cried and repeated that - a lot! I knew that if I didn't have a strategy, I feared becoming an invalid and, consequently, being forced to take early retirement.

I became so weak I would crawl up the stairs on my hands and knees. I had physically slowed down because I lost the use of my arm and really didn't feel well most of the time. To top it all off, I was grieving for my marriage that once held so much promise of love and happiness. However, my brain was still in work mode; it had not slowed me down, I wanted to recover and get back to my usual self as quickly as possible, so I surfed the web, bought books, studied the mind and its working, and discovered Mindfulness. I began practicing Mindfulness and approached everything I did intentionally. I found that for me, Mindfulness worked well if I made it a 'lifestyle' rather than as a practice where one dips in and out. I would forget to be mindful by way of practice, but becoming a lifestyle soon became second nature.

To create a Mindful life, I knew I must become familiar with Mindfulness and learn all that I could. I came to understand that If I studied the theories of Mindfulness, I would understand it, then slowly, I would become more mindful a little bit more every day.

 Holistic Health

I learned that Mindfulness and Holistic Health go together. Mindfulness cannot be separated from the idea of Holistic Health which cares for the whole person. In terms of understanding Mindfulness, we will briefly look at Holistic Health and see how it fits together.

What is Holistic Health? The term may conjure up all kinds of otherworldly ideas for you- it did for me! The first thing that came to mind was the practice of alternative medicine, naturopathy, or other Eastern-inspired health trends – and at least I was partly right.

It is essential to point out here that Holistic Health is not a cooky-spooky form of practice; conversely, it is serious science. Mindfulness has proven to be a scientific and intelligent approach to total health and wellbeing.

Mindfulness a Proven Science

Therapeutics for holistic health are scientifically proven to work throughout the world by reputable researchers. Like alternative medicine, Mindfulness focuses on wellness and prevention rather than just treating the problem. In other words, it gets to the 'root' of the cause and assists and heals from the inside out. The holistic approach allows the emotions, body, and mind to find their own equilibrium to heal itself and helps to maintain its health.

Holistic health is about caring for the whole person — providing for your emotional, physical, mental, spiritual, and social needs. It's rooted in the understanding of Shalom. The mind-body and spirit affect each other, having a knock-on effect for good health or even sickness that impacts your overall health.

In my mindfulness journey (that I am still on), I learned that all the sum of my mind, body, and emotions are connected. Therefore, they have a bearing upon each other. That is why in my book Nothing Good about Grief- I include a mindfulness experience to help calm and heal the Mind, Body, and Soul.

Why I Dived Deeper into Mindfulness

I found that the mindful approach can boost my relationships, mental and physical health. This got me very excited, so I delved deeper into learning more.

Studies show that having close friendships, indeed any good relationship lowers blood pressure, reduces stress levels, and can even improve the chances of surviving cancer. Wow! That got my attention, and now I realized WHY Mindfulness would be so beneficial for me.

Moreover, medical doctors who take a holistic approach to health don't just ask their patients about presenting symptoms. Instead, they ask you about their overall health, lifestyle, and relationships, so they can make personalized recommendations to improve your wellness.

Integrating Mindfulness into my life involved acceptance in the way I became aware of my thoughts and feelings without judging myself. I came to learn that this means that there is no right or wrong way to think or feel in a given moment. When I began to live mindfully, I noticed that I could tune into whatever I was sensing at the present moment rather than rehashing the past or imagining the future or overthinking- as I often did.

As I progressed, I found that Mindfulness was so easy to implement. It is low cost, not subject to favourable conditions or location. To live a Mindful life only requires the will to do it, time, and consistency. Despite the ease of implementing Mindfulness, like any new habit, it can be overwhelming for beginners. Where should you start? Should you implement a daily meditation session, mindful eating, mindful exercise, or mindful walking? The answer is you should start small- May you Be Blessed as you begin your Mindfulness journey!
